Liberty Sculpture Park - Yermo - California

Liberty Sculpture Park had been on my “visit” radar for quite some time. When a recent opportunity to head out into the Mojave for a couple days presented itself, the radar went crazy. Or maybe it was the heat that was crazy. Wandering around in the desert with temps over 100°F might not be the smartest thing, but like they say, it was a dry heat…. and with EddieWorld right across the street as a safe, cool place to recover and hydrate, no problem.

So what’s it all about? Liberty Sculpture Park is a unique outdoor museum with fantastic art dedicated to themes of freedom, democracy, human rights and remembrance. The park was founded in 2017 by a Chinese-born dissident sculptor name Chen Weiming, along with fellow activists. The park covers 36-acres and features approximately twenty different, though-provoking works depicting significant events and figures associated with struggles for freedom. Many of the sculptures were built by volunteers and funded through small donations from supporters around the world. The setting is awesome and it’s definitely a worthwhile High Desert roadside attraction to visit. Maybe just not in the middle of summer….

It’s easy to find, located immediately south of the 15 in Yermo, Cal. Take the Calico Rd exit, ead south to Yermo Rd, make a right and the entrance will be a short distance away.

Following are a few images I took while wandering about the park, they’re presented here in no particular order. I think my favorite was the bust of Oglala Lakota war leader, Chief Crazy Horse. Enjoy.

All of the sculptures have information plaques or signs to explain what they represent. Click on any of the images to see a larger shot.

It took me around forty minutes to walk around the complex, but I wasn’t really taking my time, as the sun was trying to bake me like a chocolate chip cookie.

In cooler weather, a walk around the park, reading all the information and taking lots of pictures could easily stretch into a couple of hours.

And that’s a wrap, at least for this excursion. Another trip is definitely a possibility. Hope you enjoyed this walk though, please leave a comment.
