The Kofa Cafe, slightly off the beaten path in the Arizona desert. I’ve read it called “world-famous,” and that is likely true. Unfortunately, it’s been closed for quite a while. I couldn’t find much information, but a brief Dun & Bradstreet states that it began operation in 1998. It apparently was a very popular dining spot for many years, especially with bikers and truckers. After the original owners closed the place down, it sat for a bit but was then purchased and reopened. The revival didn’t last long and it was closed for a second time, from which it has not (an probably will not) recover.

Holding my iPhone up to the front windows, I was able to get a couple decent pictures of the interior. It looks like it was a cool diner throwback. A mural on the left wall, a patterned tin ceiling, and on the back wall in the photo on the left, there is a map of the U.S. where customers could place a pin and note showing from where they came from. A nice long counter in the photo on the right, pass-through window at the very back for the food orders and lots of the original items still on the counter, including a menu at the very front. I don’t think I’d try the condiments, though.

Click on any of the photos to see them in a slightly larger size.

It’s such a cool building, I hope that perhaps it might one day be brought back to life.
